The Origins of Planetarion

Spinner on Planetarion

Spinners words during an interview with Adam Rodman from http://www.justadventure.com

'The idea dates back to summer 1999. Three wise heads got together, some with experience from making games, some with database backbone experience, and we decided we wanted to make a game by ourselves. We took a look around at what existed and decided we could do better. Nothing wrong with a decent self-esteem when setting out on something like this. So we gathered ideas for a while, and since Star Wars was a movie people were talking about around that time we, well, decided to go to space and sci-fi setting. We were also huge fans of Starcraft and Elite, so it wasn't a hard choice. So we sat down and started to make the actual game then, on our own spare time. Heh, I remember when we had something called spare time. First we outlined ideas on paper, then went to visual design on the screen, and then we started implementing, or programming if you want to call it that. And in February 2000, we launched it for the first time ... my, oh my ... That was a rush!'

Round Summary

The first round of Planetarion began on the 1st of February 2000. At this stage all galaxies consisted of 25 planets filled up sequentially via sign-ups. The first alliances formed were based around clusters, which at that point contained 50 galaxies each, thereby becoming known as cluster alliances. Some of these cluster alliances went on to form the most famous alliances in the game, notably The 17th Legion, based in cluster 17, which went on to become Legion and c7R, based in cluster 7, which went on to become Fury. Others included T6E, cluster 6. TPE was formed mainly in cluster 6 -and some belonged also belonged to to T6E- but was a different alliance.

The most famous alliance from Round 1 is almost unquestionably Concordium. First formed as a cluster alliance in c2 it spread beyond its cluster to take in other galaxies and become the first dominanting alliance in PA history. Although perceived by most to be the victor of Round 1 its control of the universe was far from complete. Another powerful alliance at the time was Rinoa's Eclipse, although largely they had risen to this point via staying out of the way of Concordium. The end of the round was put off a number of times by PACrew and this led to vast swathes of the universe suiciding their fleets on the top galaxies, primarily Concordium ones.

Along different lines c7R, with others, planned a large attack on Concordium. Members of the top Rinoa's Eclipse' galaxies, being told they weren't allowed to defend Conc, split off to form their own alliance, primarily to avoid provoking the Conc galaxies which had tolerated them. These galaxies tagged Oooooomph and the alliance called itself BlueTuba. With the lack of formalised alliance rankings at this stage one of the main focuses in the game was on the galaxy rankings, where, due to arguments over when the round really ended, a c7R and 2 BT galaxies could all claim the #1 spot. However the vast majority of the top planets and galaxies were Concordium ones.
