Red defense is a tactic used when defensive ship availability is low. Since it is possible to lower the number of roids lost by taking advantage of the game rules discouragement of overkilling a target. This tactic was more efficient in pre-PAX rounds when members of your own alliance could attack you, and the roid capture formula reduced maximum available capture based on the value of attacking ships present.
