A tick is a "turn" in Planetarion, everything happens - progresses, through "ticks", real-life counter-part of "ticks" would just be actual time. A tick occurs every 1 hour (during xx:00:30) in Planetarion. After a tick occurs, one hour is deducted from every activity - whether fleet launch, research or construction in the game, and resources are updated, battles commence "during the tick".
